Modelling Rivers

River

Rivers are natural water courses. They have vital contributions to the social and economical welfare of societies living along their course. They provide continuous, usually dependable, flow and supply of water. Accordingly, centralised civilisation began emerging independently along number of river valleys; e.g. the Nile, Tigris and Euphrates, the Indus and the Yellow Rivers. Since then, mankind has been in continuous struggle to understand and live in harmony with this gift/force of nature. Modelling rivers is the modern way to understand their behaviour and is an essential tool to tackle several river problems.

Delft3D is the state-of-the-art modelling framework for hydrodynamics, water quality, ecology, waves and morphology.

Here, in this space, we share knowledge & experiences, and discuss issues related to modelling of rivers.

Vegetation input file for 3D model in FLOW

Greetings?

I am using Delft3D FLOW vegetation module DPM to run the current flow over vegetation, but the vegetation are all under rigid assumption, right? May I ask, is there any input for 'vegetation' to consider the flexibility of the vegetation, such as sea grass?

Thank you,
Xiaofeng

Hi Xiaofeng,

It is possible to model vegetation as rigid parts, connected to each other with turnable "pivot" points. It will move with the water flow.

Attached is an example input file. Adding a description to the manual is on our TODO list.

Regards,

Adri

Hi Xiaofeng, Adri,

their posts have been very interesting for me, because I would like to include in my morphological simulations the seagrass effects. A couple of weeks ago, I was looking for and reading some papers about it. In these papers the authors used DELFT 3D. I saw that in a couple of papers, the authors add the vegetation effect, varying the roughness, even I found a kind of booked of Deltares in where we can found some Nikuradse values. I have some doubts about use this way to include the vegetation effect in simulations.
For this reason, their post are relevant for me, because I understood and reviewing the Adri's file, I can give to DELFT 3D more specific seagrass morphological data in order to get a real simulation.
But, I don't have clear the way to use the DPM module. Should I call this module from mdf file?

Thanks.

Hi Sasha and Xiaofeng,

This functionality is rather new. My colleague Jasper Dijkstra works on it. Please contact him for further questions.

Dear Sr,

I working with 3d vegetation model and I got this messagge :

*** Start of Rigid 3D Vegetation Model input
Number of vegetations: 1
Number of areas : 1
ItPlant : 50
ClPlant : 0.80000
Vegetation number 1, type : mangrove
Area number 1, type : mangrove
*** ERROR Unable to match Polygon plants (used in Area 1) with the specified polygons
*** ERROR Flow exited abnormally

I have checked the polygon names files and they are correct. I don´t know the problem

Hi,
Have you solved the problem?
I got similar error with you but not exactly the same.

*** MESSAGE Morphological Changes Start Time (step) : 681120

*** Start of Directional Point Model of Vegetation input
Number of vegetations: 1
Number of areas : 1
ItPlant : 50
ClPlant : 0.80000
Vegetation number 1, type : reed
Angle of vegetation is calculated using specified densities
Area number 1, type : reed
*** ERROR Using polygons but no polygon file specified
*** ERROR Flow exited abnormally

Is it possible your polygon number defined by *.pol is not same as lines of vegetation date? (if you have not found the answeremoticon)

1. My version is Deltares, Delft3D-FLOW Version 4.00.07.000000, Dec 08 2011, 21:48:14, So I am wandering if I need to install a new version?
2. Also some versions use *.pla for vegetation input while here use *.inp file.
3. It is time consuming to use polygon to define vegetation area manually, is it possible to prepare vegetation date without QUICKIN?

I am confused ... could someone help me?~ see attachment~

Thanks

Hi.
I'm using additional parameter 'Filpla' in Delft3D-Flow with polygon to add vegetation effect.
The model was running, but when i opened trih and trim file, there is only one time step shown. (should be 221 time steps)
the error script shows as follow.

it doesn't say 'simulation finished'

Could anyone help me out? Thanks a lot.
