First/initial tutorial on setting up a D-Flow FM grid now available

Youngling Posts: 0 Join Date: 5/29/12 Recent Posts
Dear D-Flow FM enthusiasts,

A first tutorial on setting up a D-Flow FM grid using RGFGRID is now available under screencasts.
Please note that the current RGFGRID developments might alter some of the appearances as suggested in the current screencast (this will be updated in the future)

Feel free to post any of your related questions.

Regards,

Freek

Dear Freek,

I am working on Delft3D . I downloaded the code a few months ago. But till now RGFGRID suite doesn't support flexible meshes. How can I include D-Flow FM grid using RGFGRID.Shall I download the code again or use any of the OpenEarth Tools available?

Any answer would be really helpful.

Regards,
Antonia

Dear Renan,

Thanks for your advice. If I download the new version should I reinstall the programme or just copy and paste the new code in the GUI? I work on Windows.

Thanks again!

Dear Antonia,
You don't need to install, it's just copy and past.

Hi,

I have been able to convert my existing D-Flow model inputs into format required for the flexible mesh model using ddd2dfm (which has proven to be quite handy). However, it is unclear how to download and install the GUI that supports the input file (.mdu). Based on the D-Flow Flexible Mesh user manual dated June 13, 2013 Under section 2.1 Installation, it appears that I need to download dflowfm software package; I can not find this download anywhere.

Can you please advise how I can install the GUI required to run a simulation using D-Flow FM. I have recently installed the latest GUI (delft3d_ohmw_4.01.00.rc.03), which has functionality within RGFGRID to work with the net.nc grid files but it does not seem to be compatible with the mdu file. In summary I would like to know how I can run D-Flow FM after I have made my mesh file (*net.nc).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Jennifer,

Loading a *.mdu file will be possible in the 1D/2D/3D GUI within the Delta Shell framework, this GUI is still under development ( http://publicwiki.deltares.nl/display/nghs/Development )
Currently, some beta testers are working with D-Flow FM, but this is merely taking place in a development environment.
We'll keep you updated on upcoming releases regarding D-Flow FM.

Hi Antonia,

The current release of RGFGRID doesn't completely support unstructured meshes as of yet (some functionality is available), but keep an eye out for updates on the forum. By then, simply download and update your Suite (or parts you want to update).

You could also try to use some tools from OET, for instance ddd2dfm: http://oss.deltares.nl/web/delft3d/d-flow-flexible-mesh/-/message_boards/view_message/277854 from my colleague Wim, to get a feeling for the new input files.

Many thanks for such valuable tutorial. Indeed, D-Flow FM (and new RGFGRID) provides amazing flexibility for setting up unstructured grids.

Just to make some points clear:

1. How to interpolate depths on the grid?
2. After generating triangular grid in lat/lon coordinates (attached) I've had some problems with opening grid in quickplot:

• Catch in d3d_qp\quickview
• Reference to non-existent field 'plotcoordinate'.

Sorry if I'm missing the very beginnings.

Kind regards

Hi Dmitry,

I've successfully loaded your unstructured mesh in RGFGRID.

1.) This is typical Quickin functionality, as of now, this functionality is not present in Quickin yet. When Delft3D flexible mesh is getting completely open-source, this functionality is added to Quickin. Eventually, this functionality (along with RGFGRID functionality) will be merged into one single program/GUI.

2.) I've noticed the same problem with the Quickplot release, this functionality will be added in the near future. But for now, you could try using the matlab code dflowfm.readNet & dflowfm.plotNet

Cheers,

Hi Freek,

Thank you for the detailed answer. I will use readNet & plotNet for now.

Dear Freek,

I have downloaded the newest version of Delft3D-GUI, but I find that I can't use the grid clicking tool as it shows in the Tutorial D-Flow FM Grid generation(1) in the screen cast. A error massage window appeared. Is this mean the grid clicking tool is unavailable at present or there are some other reasons? Thank you.

Best regards,

Hi Hualong,

Indeed, the grid clicking for unstructured grids will be released soon, in a new RGFGRID version.
