Reservoir sedimentation

Reservoir sedimentation

Sediment can come from soil erosion in the catchment and may gradually accumulate from the river in the reservoirs. This accumulation is a serious problem in many parts of the world and has severe consequences for water management, flood control, and production of energy. RIBASIM can be used to analyze these reservoir sedimentation problems by generating inflow time series for existing, planned and potential reservoirs under various upstream developments and scenarios. Those time series can be used as boundary inflow time series for reservoir sedimentation models:

  • Like the detailed Deltares hydraulic Delft3D software.

  • RIBASIM also includes the reservoir sedimentation model RibSERES model. This model is used for the prediction of sedimentation in reservoirs by applying the trap-efficiency of reservoirs. The characteristics of the reservoir are modelled in more detail by a ‘sliced’ approach. Reservoir sediment management operation rules like sluicing and flushing of sediment are included in the operation rules of the reservoir and the effect on the reservoir sedimentation is analyzed with RibSERES.

However, modelling of reservoir sedimentation might be a complex exercise for sedimentation specialists the effects of interventions (measures, management actions) can be quickly and easily estimated using RIBASIM and RibSERES. The effects can be shown in terms of changes in active reservoir storage and sediment transport. The use of detailed mathematical and or physical scale models are for fine-tuning and determination of uncertainties.
