FAQ1 Installation - part 1

Installation and operation test

FAQ 1.1 I just have installed RIBASIM and I am trying out one of the example basins models. When I tried to view the node and link model data from the map automatically AUTOCAD is being started. What is wrong?

Answer. See also the RIBASIM Readme Release Notes at the chapter on the installation procedure. You cannot use RIBASIM when you have AUTOCAD on your pc. So, uninstall AUTOCAD from your pc.

FAQ 1.2 I just have installed RIBASIM and I am trying out one of the example basins models. The models are not running. What is wrong?

Answer. See also the RIBASIM Readme Release Notes at the chapter on the installation procedure. It might be that your anti-virus software is blocking the execution of RIBASIM. In the past there has been some problems with Kapensky anti-virus software. Check your anti-virus software and inactivate it.

FAQ 1.3 I just have installed RIBASIM and I am trying out one of the example basins models. At the task block “River basin simulation” I get the message below. What is wrong?

Answer. See also RIBASIM Readme Release Notes at the chapter on the installation procedure. It might be that:

  • You did not install the license manager and license file. See the installation notes in the file “Installation RIBASIM7 01 procedure.pdf”.
  • your anti-virus is blocking. There has been some problems with Kapensky anti-virus software. Check your anti-virus software and inactivate it.

By the way, you can use RIBASIM also without a license cq valid license file. If you push the Enter button at the above screen message then the simulation will continue and run correctly if your network is within certain limitation: maximum 50 nodes and 50 links and for each node and link type as listed in the table below.

FAQ 1.4 Does RIBASIM require other third-party software to run?

Answer. No. RIBASIM does not require any other third-party software. That is very comfortable so you can start modelling and using RIBASIM directly after the installation. See the RIBASIM Readme Release Notes at the chapter on the installation procedure

FAQ 1.5 The values in the spreadsheet tool to edit the model data from map are shown in a number format with a comma as decimal symbol but it must be a point. How can I change this?

Answer. The regional setting under the control panel of your pc are not set correctly. RIBASIM requires the setting “English (United States)”. The decimal symbol must be a point. The digit grouping symbol can be a comma. See the RIBASIM Readme Release Notes at the chapter on the installation procedure. You can change the regional setting by:

Goto This PC > Select “Control Panel Home” > Select at “Clock and Region” the item “Change date, time and number formats” > Set Format on “English (United States)” and select “Additional settings” (see below) > Check the settings for the decimal symbol which must be a point.

FAQ 1.6 I get the “Run-time error 76” message as shown below when I start the Case Analysis Tool (CAT) under the title screen menu item “Open and analyze”. What is wrong?>

Answer. The CAT settings file “Settings.cat” has not been correctly configured. You must update this file as follows:

Goto your model Rbn-directory > Open the file “Settings.cat” with Notepad or another editor > Change the model names in the file to your model name as indicated in Table 2 > Save the file.

FAQ 1.7 How can I install an example or another RIBASIM model?

Answer. See also the RIBASIM Readme Release Notes, and the chapter on the installation procedure. All data related to a RIBASIM model are stored in the Rbn-directory. The name of the Rbn-directory is the name of the model (maximum 8 characters). You must copy the whole Rbn-directory to the directory “RIBASIM7” on your pc. When you start RIBASIM then the newly added model is automatically shown in the list of available models among which you can select. There are many example models provided with the RIBASIM software. The example models show various options of the RIBASIM software.

FAQ 1.8 The values in the tables with model data are not according to my input model data which I had entered and viewed in the spreadsheet tool from map. It seems that the decimals values are not read correctly. What is wrong here?

Answer. The regional setting under the control panel of your pc are not set correctly. RIBASIM requires the setting “English (United States)”. The decimal symbol must be a point.

FAQ 1.9 I am a beginning RIBASIM users. What is the best way to learn RIBASIM?

Answer. If you want to learn RIBASIM then the best way is by using the software and try it out but first you need a bit of basic knowledge. This can be gained by:

Step 1 View the instruction video “QS RIBASIM HQ Video 1 Start Setup Base Case V2.mp4” in which the Quick Start exercise is presented.
Step 2 View the RIBASIM Quick Start Guide and carry out the Quick Start exercise in which you are guided step by step to make a model.
