When adressing a model crash or bug, please remember to include an entire model setup in your post that reproduces the crash or exposes the bug. Also add the XBlog.txt file. This is necessary information for people that are trying to help you. Including your model setup can be achieved by adding the zipped run directory (excluding output) as an attachment to the post.

connection between Delft3D-FLOW and XBeach

Hi everyone!

I'm working on tsunami inundation maps for my thesis and I would create these inundation maps using the effect of mangrove forests on the coast.
I run the tsunami simulation starting from the earthquake characteristics, bu then I would like to use a XBeach model to simulate the mangrove forest in the area and get a more precise inundation map than the one given by Delft3D-FLOW.

My question is, can I use as input for a XBeach model the wave simulated with Delft3D-FLOW? And if yes, could you explain how?

Cheers!

Pietro

Hi Pietro,

Yes, that is possible.

If you read the water level and depth-averaged velocities from your Delft3D-FLOW simulation and use this as the flow boundary condition in your XBeach simulation you will be good to go. You could do this both in a surfbeat simulation (without any short waves) or in a nonh simulation and make your own ts_nonh.

See for more information here: http://xbeach.readthedocs.io/en/stable/

Cheers, Kees

Hi kees!

First of all, I thank you for the answer.

I'm new with both Delft3D and XBeach, so I kindly ask you some really basic questions:

How do I read the water level and the average depth from the Delft3D simulation?

How do I set these boundary conditions in XBeach?

What do you mean with surfbeat simulation and nonh simulation?

I know that I'm basically asking you a step-to-step solution at the problem, but from the XBeach manual it's hard to understand these things for me.

Thank you,

Pietro

Hi Pietro,

For XBeach, I'd recommend you to have a look at the tutorials at http://xbeach.readthedocs.io.

Also make sure to keep an eye on the course calendar (https://www.deltares.nl/en/academy-courses/), you may be interested in attending one of the Delft3D/Xbeach courses.

Cheers
